Tips for Travellers

Major New Zealand Destinations

The beautiful Bay of Islands maritime park consists of 144 islands and bays, and is located on the east coast of Far North, New Zealand, on the North Island.  The Bay of Islands region includes the coastal towns of Kerikeri, Opua, Paihia, Russell and Waitangi; and is considered to be the ‘birthplace’ of modern New Zealand.  As we’re in the southern hemisphere, the northern tip is the warmest, sub tropical part of New Zealand and is often referred to as the ‘winterless’ north.  Even in the middle of winter, we often experience warm, sunny days ideal for sight seeing and walking.

Most travelers touring New Zealand place the Bay of Islands first or last on their itinerary.  Personally, we feel the Bay of Islands is the perfect place to relax and chill out at the end of your holiday. Many people drop their hire car in the Bay of Islands, and fly back to Auckland International Airport from our local Bay of Islands regional airport here in Kerikeri.

Moon Gate Villa offers complimentary transfers to/from Bay of Islands airport, which is located less than 5 minutes away.

Ways to Get Here

Flying all the way through to/from Bay of Islands airport is a great way to start or finish your New Zealand holiday.  When you factor in transfers to Auckland hotels, overnight accommodation and the ‘jetlag’ factor, you could be recovering whilst relaxing in our beautiful gardens, rather than wrestling with Auckland traffic – for about the same costs! Most major car rental companies allow pick ups and returns from Bay of Islands airport.

Travelers arriving via Air New Zealand can book their flight straight through to Bay of Islands Airport (Kerikeri). Air New Zealand schedules 5 flights per day from Auckland, and the flight takes approximately 40 minutes. We recommend booking ahead as early as possible to secure a good price. International travellers arriving in Auckland should head straight to the transfers desk in the international terminal as soon as clearing customs. Here you can check-in for your domestic flight before catching the free transfer bus to the domestic terminal.

Kerikeri is 3 hours drive from Auckland CBD or 3.5 hours from Auckland International Airport on State Highway 1.  The major car hire companies have depots in Kerikeri and Bay of Islands Airport, so it’s possible to pick up or drop off a car at each end. The trip north from Auckland is very pleasant indeed, with a number of side tours possible. Moon Gate Villa is located just off the main road into Kerikeri, and has ample, safe, off street parking. If you require assistance with car hire, please let us know when booking your stay at Moon Gate Villa. We provide more information on the drive up here on our Auckland to Kerikeri page.

A number of coach/bus lines have services leaving morning, lunchtime and evening everyday between Auckland CBD and Bay of Islands (Paihia and Kerikeri). Services stop for regular breaks, and take around 4 and 1/2 hours. Some services may have a toilet on board – it’s wise to check if you prefer this. The Auckland coach depot is in Hobson Street, Auckland CBD beneath Skytower.  A taxi from Auckland Airport is around $70, or the Airbus service is currently $16 per person one way. We are happy to collect guests and their luggage from the Kerikeri coach stop.
